Scene 14

In this scene Ui is having a dream about Roma haunting him from the dead.
The way this scene is set out is Ui is asleep on a chair with his two bodyguards asleep next to him on the floor.
We thought it would be really creepy to have Roma behind the screen so we could do some shadow works.
To make the scene even creepier we are going to have two other people-(Liam and Max) behind the screen with Roma-(Greta) and have them as extra arms, so it's almost like Roma has grown and is more powerful.

In this scene I'm a bodyguard on the floor. In earlier scenes we all decided to make the bodyguards really dopey and stupid. I found this hard to show in this scene because obviously, I'm asleep, until the very end, anyway. But to show the dopeyness of the bodyguard I tried variou different thing, like snoring, moving around loads Eric. But I felt that by doing this it would take the focus away from the important part of the scene- Roma's speech and Ui's reaction. So I thought I'd do something small and sweet, so I started sucking gym thumb and moving here and there, so it's not taking away any main focus of the scene.

Character development

I feel as though I have worked hard towards developing all of my characters over the past few weeks.

My main character; Butcher, I've taken so much time really thinking about his gests and what he wants in each scene.
Like in scene two, I wasn't entirely sure how he would act in that situation.
However, now I've thought about my gests and what his main objection is, I've decided that he's quite creepy and can/thinks he can be quite manipulative and that he'd do anything for a bit of cash in his pockets.
So to portray this, I've made him really touchy-feely with Dogsborough in scene two and really over friendly and confident.

My other character; Young Dogsborough, I've tried to make him quite funny, by making him really alert of everything and
given him a squeakier voice then all of the other characters in the play. His character reminds me of the cartoon character, Scrappy-Doo, because in scene 4, Young Dogsborough tries to stand up to Roma, but gets too scared and pipes down. This remind me of Scrappy-Doo because Scrappy is always trying to act harder than he is and never gets anywhere with it.

I've had a lot of trouble with The Woman, in scene 9, because I feel really self-conscious having to act so dramatic and upset on stage on my own.
I also wasn't sure how to act it.
However, when I performed it to the class, I didn't do what they said too, I improvised a bit, and it felt a lot more natural. I was stood up- stumbling around, screaming, shouting and crying for help. This for me, for my character was a lot better than crawling on the floor because I felt very limited as to what I could do.
As a starting point I used Stanislavski technique of keeping everything naturalistic, then when I got used to this, and comfortable with it I made it bigger and more stylised, so it was more Brechtian, I also used the Artaud technique of pushing myself to the limit, so I could make my performance more raw and real.

Which Commedia Del'Arte character suits my character and what animal ismy character

Butcher:
I think Butcher has a bit of Pantalone and The Doctor's characteristics and objectives in the show.

I think Pantalone because Pantalone loves money and is also very stingey with it.
In scene 1 and 2, Butcher shows this a lot with Dockland scheme, because he's trying to con Dogsborough into buying the docks so him and the other Cauliflower men get the money.

The Doctor I think links back to Butcher because Butcher thinks he's really clever for coming up with this big elaborate con to get the money off Dogsborough, when really Dogsorough really knows what Butcher is up too-(you find that out in scene 3).

I think Butchers animal is similar to a peacock, because he's bit of a creep in scene two towards Dogsborough, so it's like a peacock showing off his beautiful feathers to get what he wants.
I feel like Butcher moves like a leopard stalking his prey, moving really swiftly and cautiously-(in the second scene).
I think when he isn't after anything, and is relaxed he's very confident, so maybe a bird of prey. Confident, proud and always of the look out for someone/something weaker than him to catch into a trap.

The Woman:
I'm not sure which Commedia Del'Arte The Woman is, as you don't find out much about her. You only see her crawl from under the truck in a state of shock.
Same with her animal.

However, what I can relate the Woman too is humanity today.
There are so many problems all round the world, like Russia, Tunisia, North Korea and in many other countries around the world.
I feel like the Woman is one of the most important characters in the whole show, even though she's only in one scene.
I think this because she's a representation of everybody who is getting murdered around the world and the audience will hopefully realise this when they watch the scene and think of what's going on all around the world.

Friday's stagger through notes

Notes from first stagger through of act one at Pelham:

-think of entrances and exits
-make sure I'm always reacting!
-share with the audience your intentions
-imagine the scenery
-keep talking out to the audience and listening out
-whenever it's an end of a scene  become show girls and move staging
-think of my physicality-think of gests
-good reacting to Dogsborough
-entrance Ui and Roma, really good and threatening
-scene 5, "he's late", take my time more!!
-scene six good expressions
-need to get a better transitions between Ui's
-possibly use shadows for the mirroring

I feel like in today's stagger through I was focussing to much about my lines instead of letting them come naturally, so next time I'm going to relax and let them come naturally to me, instead of stopping and causing a fuss, then my facial expressions should come along with that.

Scene 9

In this scene the class and I decided that I would be the Woman in this scene.

In this scene its split into "a" and "b". However, a member of the class had the idea of merging the two speeches together between Dogsborough and the Woman.
It worked brilliantly.
Instead of having the Woman start the scene, we're having Dogsborough open it saying "Thus I, honest Dogsborough,
After eighty years as an honourable man,
Did willingly consent to all crimes
Perpetrated by this bloody gang."- then my character will start saying her first line "Help. You there- please don't leave. I need witnesses."
It will be like this through the whole scene. I think it works really well for the scene because Dogsborough is writing a letter in his home about how he isn't as honest as everyone thinks he is, and having the Woman in the scene is proving his point, because he never tried to prevent anything bad from happening.

I think this works well because it's showing the crimes that Dogsborough let happen as he's saying it.

New gests

Over the past week and a bit, I've been thinking and trying out different actions that can be associated with my character.

I came up with pulling on the front of my suit jacket, because it shows confidence and power, however it can also show nervousness because people can get fidgety when they're nervous and this could also be a comfort move for Butcher to do, to remind him that he does have some power.

My second gest I feel works for Butcher is leaning back-slightly-and having my hands on my hips.
I think this would work well because it's showing Butcher is a very open and confident character.

My third gest is reaching out with the palm of my hand open.
This works because when Butcher is trying to convince Dogsborough to give them the loan, it's almost like he's reaching out to Dogsborough, asking for the money through his physicality.
